The university was founded in 1889 by General Ştefan Fălcoianu , being the sixth staff school in Europe, along with those in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Turin and Brussels, initially called the "School of War".
The French, German and Soviet influences made their presence felt in the training process within this institution. "LABOR IMPROBUS OMNIA WON" - Hard work always wins! This is the motto that has been the basis for the education and training of a very large number of officers from all categories of the armed forces, from the establishment to the present day.
Education at the National Defense University "Carol I" provides a complete and complex training aimed at consolidating the scientific tools and methodology necessary for the superior use of the principles and norms of military action and leadership of tactical, joint and operational level in time of peace, crisis and war.
